Teaching Artist Mir Naqibul Islam takes you on an immersive musical journey into South Asian rhythms and grooves.

Students learn to recite each groove, clap along with the rhythms, and progressively build from simple to more complex patterns.

LESSONS

This is the first lesson of the South Asian Rhythm & Grooves unit. Students will be introduced to the six-beat groove, dadra tal. They will learn how to recite the groove and clap along with the rhythm. Students will then perform together as a group.

This is the second lesson of the South Asian Rhythm & Grooves unit. Students will be introduced to the seven-beat groove, rupak tal. They will learn how to recite the groove and clap along with the rhythm. Students will then perform together as a group.

This is the third lesson of the South Asian Rhythm & Grooves unit. Students will be introduced to the eight-beat groove, keherwa tal. They will learn how to recite the groove and clap along with the rhythm. Students will then perform together as a group.

This is the fourth lesson of the South Asian Rhythm & Grooves unit. Students will be introduced to the ten-beat groove, jhap tal. They will learn how to recite the groove and clap along with the rhythm. Students will then perform together as a group.

This is the fifth lesson of the South Asian Rhythm & Grooves unit. Students will be introduced to the sixteen-beat groove, tin tal. They will learn how to recite the groove and clap along with the rhythm. Students will then perform together as a group.
